There was once a time when the word “competition” was not synonymous with the phrase “cut throat”. There was once a time when a sports star was a star by the grace of his or her superior ability on the field, while the tabloids were left to politics and Hollywood; when a single athlete’s heroics could bring a nation to its feet, could join hands, and shed tears. It was not so long ago when records were broken by feats of unimaginable strength and not steroids, when fights were won within the ring and not outside of it, when every action of a sport’s star was praised and not questioned.
