people Nick doesn’t even know join the group and show up to cheer his name.
It is the final home game of the season, and Nick finds himself in the starting lineup for senior night. He is surrounded by his family and friends and everyone is all smiles; afterwards he contends that all he could think about was who he was supposed to guard. “I just didn’t want to let my team down. Thomas and Rommel, Ari? Those guys were seniors and deserved to go out with a win and I wanted to do everything I could to help give them that,” Nick looks away and takes a deep breath. “They deserved it.” Nick played the first five minutes of the game, taking part in key defensive stops and executing on the offensive end, helping the Aggies set the tone that would see them to their fifth and final win; UC Davis prevailed 77-68 over in-state rival Cal State Fullerton and the seniors were able to say goodbye to the Pavilion with a win.
Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Nicolas Karvelas, the young man who before every game silently thanked everyone that he knew for the opportunity that he earned. Forget the scandals, forget the arrests and allegations that swirl around sports. This is a young man who answered the question, “What did you contribute to the team?” with “I hope I was able to show everyone how fun basketball could be, how fun anything could be, when you give it everything that you have.”
