One of Nick’s coaches called him out during a practice late in the season. It was the assistant head coach, Greg Clink, someone who had been present throughout the four years that Nick tried out for the team, and someone for whom Nick held a great deal of respect. Coach Clink stopped practice and announced in front of every player present that he had been one of the people that doubted whether Nick should be on the team. “Nick, I’ll be the first one to admit that I didn’t think you were good enough to play on this team,” Clink barked, and then looked Nick straight in the eyes. “I was dead wrong. You will never know how much respect I have for you.”
